Diptyque
Three friends – the Scottish painter Desmond Knox-Leet, the stage designer Yves Coueslant, and Christiane Gautrot, who worked in an architect's office – made a decision in the early 1960s. What ultimately led them to open a home decor shop on the Boulevard Saint-Germain in Paris in 1961 can only be speculated. The trio's plan, however, was to offer printed cotton fabrics, furniture, and imported English perfumes. The latter sold exceptionally well, so producing their own scented candle promised the perfect blend of ambiance and fragrance.
For over 40 years, Diptyque has produced a refined collection of eaux de toilette with a distinctive signature. Inspired by nature and travel – the forgotten taste of a particular fruit, the richness of a tree resin, an exotic spice, sweet and delicately scented blossoms, the fragrant depths of a balsam, and the subtle notes of wood.
Prominent customers come and go from the boutique, such as Elton John, who secures his fragrance supply there, Donatella Versace loves to sniff "Pomander" with her aesthetically corrected nose, and Karl Lagerfeld prefers "Cinnamon" and "Heliotrope" to scent his premises in a manner befitting his status.
