A Vetiver with Golden Hair
In Haiti, the rainy season is just ending… It's December in Cayes, in the south of the island. It has taken a whole year for the vetiver roots to reach their optimal length of one meter and be harvested by hand. After this process, which in Haiti is called "excavation," the roots are bundled and taken to the distillery. Now, patience is once again required. It takes 24 hours for the vetiver essence to distill and create a fragrant essential oil with golden reflections. An essence as precious as gold in Haiti, for which a solidarity project was launched in collaboration with the Swiss company Givaudan. DIPTYQUE is committed long-term to this project and buys the organically grown essence from the plots of three villages – Massy, Faucault, and Bazelais – for the composition of its Eau de Parfum Vetyverio. The solidarity project thus contributes to securing the supply chain of this unique Haitian vetiver. The long roots of the tropical sweet grass can reach a length of up to three meters and penetrate deep into the soil. With its dense root system, vetiver fixes the volcanic soil of the island and slows down its erosion. In return, the roots soak up the many minerals of this fertile soil, which give vetiver its aromatic diversity, its fiery temperament, and its finesse, and shape its irresistibly smoky, racy scent. Here, there are no thick, dark rootstocks with earthy, rough notes, as can be found elsewhere, but only delicate root filaments in light nuances like angel hair, bursting with wonderful fragrances. A vetiver of astonishing subtlety, which the DIPTYQUE perfumer uses for his reinterpretation of the Eau de Parfum Vetyverio.
Wood Inlays and Genre Mix
When a perfume focuses on vetiver, it traditionally creates a masculine fragrance, as the woody aromas provide uncompromising virility. For its Eau de Parfum Vetyverio, diptyque dares the complete opposite and is not only completely feminine, but even goes a step further. Like an inlay, this vetiver composes an overall picture with unexpected facets, sometimes full of freshness, then smoky or even downright floral.
A kaleidoscope of olfactory nuances around a single substance, presented here in an original, overdosed, sublimated form. With fine bitterness and citrus notes, grapefruit underlines the natural freshness of the wood. As a counterpoint to this almost sparkling characteristic, patchouli accentuates the smoky-spicy aroma of vetiver with its characteristic density. This verticality is set in vibration by Turkish rose, providing a surprising sensuality, a floral softness that gives this vetiver a new harmony of flowers and woods. Like other fragrances of the house, such as Eau Duelle with Madagascar vanilla, Oud Palao with Laotian oud, or Eau Mohéli with ylang-ylang from the Comoros, Vetyverio showcases a single essence that is expressed in full purity and clarity. Immediately recognizable, yet unique, it presents itself as familiar yet completely new.
DIPTYQUE pays double tribute to vetiver: with an Eau de Toilette in 2010 and now with an Eau de Parfum. Two variations by one perfumer, Olivier Pescheux. In the Eau de Toilette, two essences met, one from Java, the other from Haiti, intertwining into a subtle balance. In the Eau de Parfum, Haitian vetiver triumphs in a new concentration and unfolds in its full dimension: intense, beguiling, yet incredibly subtle.
