Cutting-edge research – the activation of the enzyme telomerase
Telomerase: In 2009, the Nobel Prize was awarded for the discovery of the youth-preserving enzyme telomerase in our cells.
With each cell division, the protective end caps of our chromosomes shorten. As we age, our telomeres naturally become shorter. If they become too short, DNA cannot be copied correctly, leading to cell turnover, mutation, and death. This affects the healthy functions of cells and tissues and accelerates aging, which in turn can lead to disease. Telomerase activity is high in young skin but slows down with age – the consequences include wrinkles, hyperpigmentation, loosening of the skin matrix, reduced barrier function, age spots, etc.
