When Thibaud visited vetiver and patchouli plantations in Indonesia, he met producers and became aware of the need to promote sustainable cultivation methods for perfume raw materials.
These are promoted in five steps:
- maintaining consistent production, as it is always threatened with being displaced by easier-to-grow plants (mainly palm oil).
- limiting soil erosion.
- avoiding the use of chemical fertilizers.
- promoting permaculture and encouraging producers to limit slash-and-burn farming, which leads to deforestation.
- maintaining a high level of quality.
