Memo Paris - Ocean Leather

A perfume like an epic.

A sudden burst of steam shoots upwards, releasing nuances of mandarin oil, violet, and basil essence. At first, just a swift appearance, a brief glimpse out of nowhere. Then, the overflowing fragrance of ship decks, scented with cedarwood, unfolds, mingled with fresh citrus notes and intense nuances of sage absolute, nutmeg, and vetiver essence. Powerful aromas and the finest essences evoke authentic leather and recall ivory tusks and ambergris—the oil bestowed by the majestic whale.

Memo Paris – Cuirs Nomades
While the "Les Echappées" collection focused on a mysterious destination, the "Cuirs Nomades" collection explores the landscapes where leather is traditionally produced. Memo is driven by the intuition that leather, in a certain way, comes to life in specific places. Isn't this also connected to nomads? The indispensable companion for every journey, the faithful partner of every globetrotter, curious mind, and adventurer setting out to discover the world, is their leather luggage. Against this backdrop, Memo has developed its own suitcase, symbolically containing all the fragrances created for and by travelers. A true treasure trove for olfactory journeys.

When people think of leather, it's probably the handbag that comes to mind first. But to avoid jumping to conclusions, it's important to understand that leather itself is part of a whole world of scents. It's a material often associated with animal notes and sometimes reduced to its strong, bold side. But leather can also have a bright, luminous, delicate side, and it's precisely these nuances of leather that fascinate Memo. From raw material to olfactory expression – the approach is similar: leather reminds some of a second, protective skin, a hard shell, a dominant fragrance, a tar flower. For others, it's the softest skin, the most delicate fur, a symbol of elegance, delicacy, and refinement. The spectrum of leather is vast, and so is its interpretation in perfumery.

To understand the connection between leather and perfume, one must delve a little into history. In the 17th century, the glove trade flourished, and to mask the animal odor, leather was perfumed according to customer wishes with the scents of sweet almonds, orange blossom, ambergris, rosemary, and many others. The title "master glove maker and perfumer" was born, and the skills of this guild were highly valued at the royal court. The French town of Grasse was famous for its tanneries and developed its expertise in perfume by cultivating its own flower fields to scent the leather tanneries. However, in the 18th century, with the emergence of competition and the decline in leather prices, this craft disappeared, and Grasse became the perfume capital.

Leather gave rise to perfume making. Although this relationship once existed in the shadows, it is now complete. What was once concealed is now being developed and enhanced.

Leather inspires, asserts itself, and enables fiery accords. The scent of leather is increasingly appreciated and is now derived from its combination with base materials such as styrax resin, labdanum, flower essences, oud, blackcurrant blossom, or synthetic materials like Suderal and IBQ (isobutyl quinolone).
For "Cuirs Nomades," Memo has created his first leatherwork, "Irish Leather." An homage to Ireland, where riding is practiced amidst boundless nature. A harmony that unites the grace of the horse with the raw power of nature. Green leather, a gallop through the grass. Other leather impressions will follow: floral leather, sumptuous leather. Powerful visions. Beautiful places for an encounter.
