This is the story of Cosimo III de'Medici and his beloved "Stufa dei Mugherini". It is the story of an infatuation: The jasmine that touched the Grand Duke's senses was of a special variety, which arrived from Goa in 1688. Grand Duke Cosimo III had a special greenhouse built for this variety, which resembles a small rose more than a classic jasmine, and forbade its cultivation throughout the empire. Only his trusted botanists could perpetuate the variety in the secret "Stufa dei Mugherini", the warm greenhouse for the Goa jasmine in the Villa Medicea di Castello, which still enchants us today.
